2013 Multistate Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 Infections Linked to Ready-to-Eat Salads

In 2013 local, state and federal investigators linked an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections to consumption of ready-to-eat salads produced by glass Onion Catering of Richmond, California. A majority of the 33 ill persons reported purchasing salads at different Trader Joe's store locations. Two types of ready-to-eat salads, the Field Fresh Chopped Salad with Grilled Chicken and Mexicali Salad with Chili Lime Chicken were consumed by 12 of 15 persons during interviews.

Case patients were reported in Arizona (1), California (28), Texas (1) and Washington (3). Illness onset dates ranged from October 13, 2013 to November 5, 2013. Nine people were hospitalized. Two developed hemolytic uremic syndrome. No deaths were reported.

On November 10, 2013 Glass Onion Catering voluntarily recalled sandwich wrap products with fully cooked chicken and ham. The products were produced between September 23, 2013 and November 6, 2013 and shipped to distribution centers for retail sale in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington.

The investigation was assigned Cluster Code 1310CAEXH-1.
