2013 Outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul Infections at a Correctional Facility, Minnesota
In September 2013 Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) staff and Washington County Public Health (WCPH) staff investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul among staff and inmates at the Stillwater Correctional Facility located in Washington County. Two staff and one inmate were laboratory confirmed with an indistinguishable strain of S. Saintpaul, STP95 (Minnesota PFGE designation). One case was hospitalized. No one died.
WCPH Environmental Health inspectors visited the prison kitchen on October 11. Several issues with food preparation and cooking practices were identified. Notably, structural, cleanliness and rodent infestation were observed in the facility kitchen.
