In March 2014 Minnesota Department of Health staff investigated an outbreak of norovirus among attendees at a meal following a monthly meeting sponsored by the Nisswa Lions Club. The dinner was catered by Red, White, and Blue Catering which operates from the Nisswa American Legion. Investigators learned of illnesses in persons who attended other events catered by Red, White, and Blue Catering around the same time period. Twenty three (72%) of 32 patrons interviewed reported illnesses that met the case definition. Two case patients sought medical care at a clinic and one patient was seen at an emergency clinic. No patients required hospitalization and no one died. Four stool specimens collected from ill patrons were positive for norovirus GII.4 Sydney. An employee of the catering company reported symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea on March 19 and recovery on March 20. The employee returned to work on March 21. The employee's job duties included plating salads and specials. The ill employee submitted a stool specimen to the Minnesota Department of Health Public Health Laboratory. The specimen was positive for norovirus GII. The specimen was not sequenced. This finding led investigators to conclude that the source of the outbreak was a recently ill food worker who had contact with ready-to-eat food items.
