2014 Multiprovince Outbreak of Salmonellosis Linked to Chia Seed Powder, Canada
Four strains of Salmonella - Newport, Hartford, Oranienburg, and Saintpaul were linked to illnesses in residents of four provinces in Canada in 2014. In total 52 cases were identified - 13 in British Columbia, 10 in Alberta, 26 in Ontario and 3 in Quebec. Six patients were hospitalized. There were no deaths reported. Dates of onset ranged from mid-December 2013 through early May 2014. Twenty six of 26 cases that were interviewed reported consumption of sprouted chia seed powder.
