2014 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonellosis Linked to Live Poultry in Backyard Flocks
In May 2014 the CDC announced an outbreak of Salmonella Infantis or Salmonella Newport linked to live poultry in backyard flocks. On October 21, 2014 the CDC declared the outbreak over. The number of outbreak associated cases was 363 persons reported by 43 states and Puerto Rico. Among the persons who reported the date they became ill, illnesses began between February 4, 2014 and September 27, 2014. Among 233 ill persons with available information, 76 (33%) were hospitalized. No deaths were reported. One hundred seventy-four (73%) of 237 ill persons interviewed reported contact with live poultry in the week before symptom onset. Findings of multiple traceback investigations of live baby poultry from homes of ill persons have identified Mt. Healthy Hatcheries in Ohio as the source of chicks and ducklings. This is the same mail-order hatchery that has been associated with multiple outbreaks of Salmonella infections in the past including in 2012 and 2013.
