2015 Outbreak of Gastroenteritis Associated with Carniceria Camecuaro, Shawnee County, Kansas

In July 2015, three individuals from two different households became ill after eating at Carniceria Camecuaro, a restaurant located in Topeka, Kansas. All experienced diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain. No one was hospitalized and no one died.

Stool culture results were available from an individual who sought emergency care. Multiplex
PCR testing revealed that the stool sample was positive for Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and
Salmonella
spp. Further analysis at the Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories by culture identified Salmonella Infantis in the sample. No attempt was made to culture EPEC.

In October 2015, two additional individuals were diagnosed with Salmonella Infantis infections, and the bacterial isolates were indistinguishable by pulsed field gel electrophoresis to isolates obtained from the patient in July. One of the two individuals agreed to be interviewed and reported consuming food from Carniceria Camecuaro in the week prior to illness onset on September 1.

Onsite inspections were conducted over a four month period. Each time multiple critical food safety violations were observed.
