2015 Outbreak of Shigella Infections at Cafe Coyote, San Diego, California
County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency and County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health investigated an outbreak of Shigella sonnei infections among customers who ate at Café Coyote on November 24, 2015 or November 25, 2015. In total 19 outbreak associated cases were identified. Six were laboratory confirmed. Thirteen were probable cases. Two were hospitalized. There were no deaths. A case control study implicated salsa although investigators were unable to determine if the salsa contained a contaminated ingredient or if the salsa was contaminated by an ill food handler.
