In September 2015 Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment (WCDPHE) investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Tyhpi infections. Three outbreak associated cases were identified. All three patients had eaten at the same restaurant during August 16-20. Two patients were hospitalized. No one died.

Public health investigators interviewed restaurant employees and collected rectal swab specimens. One employee was positive for Salmonella Typhi. Genetic testing by pulsed field gel electrophoresis showed the employee was infected with an indistinguishable strain of S. Typhi as ill restaurant patrons. Interviews with the restaurant worker revealed travel to a country with endemic typhoid fever 15 years earlier. The worker had no symptoms and no contact with ill persons. The worker was excluded from food service work and treated with azithromycin for 28 days.
