2016 Norovirus Outbreaks Linked to Rustic Local Venue, Virginia
In the fall of 2016 the Central Shenandoah Health District (Virginia) staff investigated outbreaks of norovirus linked to five events held at a local rustic venue. CSHD conducted an epidemiologic, environmental health, and laboratory investigation to determine the source. A proportion of attendees at 3 of the 5 events were interviewed. The case-control study revealed water as the common risk factor between all three outbreaks. One specimen collected from an attendee at each of the 3 events was positive for norovirus GI. Whole genome sequencing as performed on two specimens. Both specimens were identified to be norovirus G1.3B and were genetically indistinguishable. Testing by the Virginia Department of Consolidated Laboratories confirmed the presence of total coliform and E. coli in wall water samples. After installing ultraviolet light and chlorine disinfection systems, no further outbreaks occurred.
