2016 Outbreak of Hepatitis A Infections Linked to Raw Scallops Sold at Genki Sushi Restaurant, Hawaii
On July 1, 2016 Hawaii Department of Health announced an outbreak of Hepatitis A primarily occurring among residents of Oahu. By August 16 there were 168 outbreak associated cases. Forty six had been hospitalized. Illness onset dates ranged from June 12, 2016 to August 1, 2016. Investigators linked the outbreak to imported frozen scallops sold raw at Genki Sushi Restaurant on Oahu and Kauai. Genki Sushi Restaurants on these two islands were ordered closed. An embargo was placed on frozen scallop products distributed by Koha Oriental Foods and True World Foods in Hawaii.
In January 2017 HDOH declared the outbreak over. There were 281 cases and 71 hospitalizations. Two people died Onset of illness ranged between June 12, 2016 and October 9, 2016.
