In 2016 public health officials investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Infantis Linked to contact with live poultry. A total of 31 people with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Infantis were reported by 16 states. among people who reported the date they became ill, illnesses began between March 3, 2016 and September 5, 2016. Among 24 ill people with available information, 8 were hospitalized. Two deaths were reported. Salmonella infection was considered to be a cause of death in one person in Mississippi. Although the one person who died in New Jersey had a Salmonella infection, the infection was not considered to be a cause of death.
