In June 2016 state and federal investigators identified an outbreak of Botulism among inmates at a federal prison facility located in Yazoo City, Mississippi. Investigators traced the outbreak to consumption of illicitly made alcohol commonly referred to as "hooch." One inmate reported that honey, potatoes, apples, and tomato paste from a bulging can were combined, hidden, and fermented in a sealed plastic bag at room temperature for 3-5 days. Thirty one cases were identified including 19 confirmed cases and 10 probable cases. There were 2 suspected cases. Twenty four inmates were hospitalized. No one died.
