In August 2016 Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) staff investigated an outbreak of norovirus among people who attended a family luncheon held on August 27 in North Central Kansas. Food items were prepared by attendees who resided in numerous counties within the state. Twenty people completed a survey distributed to attendees by email. Twelve people met the case definition. Cases were identified in attendees from 5 counties including Cloud, Geary, Johnson, Saline and Shawnee, Kansas. Onset dates ranged from August 28 to August 30. Two stool samples were positive for norovirus, genogroup II. No one sought medical care. Consumption of grapes and strawberries were significantly associated with illness. One person reported onset of diarrhea and vomiting on August 26, 2016. Investigators theorized that this person may have prepared food items for the luncheon or contaminated environmental surfaces.
