In June 2016 Colorado public health officials investigated an outbreak of norovirus at a community pool located in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Two people were laboratory confirmed with norovirus. Thirty four others met the case definition as probable cases. Furthermore, there were 6 secondary cases including one person who was laboratory confirmed with norovirus. No one was hospitalized and no one died. Pool staff reported two separate fecal incidents occurring on June 16. The facility appropriately handled the two incidents and chlorine levels were normal in the pool at the time of closing. However, upon opening the next morning, chlorine levels were low (but in compliance) and the facility was out of chlorine for the automatic chlorinator. The staff hand fed the outdoor pool chlorine until the chlorine shipment arrived around 1:30 pm on June 17. Public health officials recommended the pool be closed for hyperchlorination. Pool operators complied.
