In the summer of 2017, local, state, and federal officials investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections reported from 9 states. Twenty outbreak associated cases were identified. Five people were hospitalized. No one died. Fourteen of 20 (70%) of cases reported consuming watermelon in the week before illness onset. Investigators from the FDA and Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development conducted a traceback of watermelons consumed by Michigan cases and cases in several other states. A common distributor or grower was no identified. National investigators concluded that watermelon was the suspected vehicle but this was not confirmed.
