2017 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella paratyphi Infections Linked to Tuna Loins
In 2017 public health officials in Clark County, Washington received reports of 5 cases diagnosed with Salmonella paratyphi. All 5 were a genetic match by PFGE. At the same time, the Oregon Health Authority reported an additional 12 cases who were also a genetic match to the Clark County cases. Ultimately, 35 outbreak associated cases were reported by 7 states. Five people were hospitalized. No one died.
Interviews by health officials revealed that most had eaten sushi or some other form of raw fish prior to symptom onset. Sample collection, laboratory testing and traceback led to a recall of frozen Newport brand tuna loins
