Between January 31 and February 3, 2017 a food prepared by a Richmond caterer providing approximately 600 orders at 28 events was implicated in a multidistrict outbreak of norovirus in Virginia. Food served at 19 events resulted in gastrointestinal illnesses. Of these 19 events, attack rates ranged from 17% to 100%. Among a subset of 502 patrons, 145 reported norovirus-like GI symptoms approximately 24 hours after consuming catered food. The Virginia Department of Consolidated Laboratories detected norovirus GII RNA in stool specimens collected from 5 employees and 2 patrons. Richmond City Health District Environmental Health inspectors identified several violations at their inspection of the catering facility. Notable violations included lack of employee health policy, improper food holding temperatures, lack of supplies at handwashing sink, overall poor hygiene and non-sanitizing dishwasher. The facility closed for one week.
