In August 2017 Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) staff and Southwest Health and Human Services (SWHHS) sanitarians investigated an outbreak of Cryptosporidium hominis infections associated with a community pool in Morgan, Minnesota.

Patrons and employees of the pool facility were interviewed. Nine patrons and 7 staff members were identified as outbreak associated cases. No cases were hospitalized. No one died. Reported onset dates ranged from July 24 to August 15. Four cases (3 patrons and 1 staff member) had Cryptosporidium hominis subtype HGP11 detected in their stool samples.

SWHHS sanitarians reviewed the facility's pool logs. The main pool was found to be consistently open when chlorine levels were recorded less than 1.0 ppm, the state regulatory minimum limit. Once the outbreak started, both staff and patrons reported swimming while ill, which likely reintroduced the parasite into the water and prolonged the outbreak.
