In February 2017, two patrons of a restaurant located in White Bear Township, Minnesota became ill with norovirus. Neither was hospitalized and no one died. One patron submitted a stool sample which was positive for norovirus GII.

Both cases reported eating the oriental chicken salad on February 21. Due to the limited number of cases and controls identified, a meaningful statistical analysis of food items could not be conducted.

Four of 47 employees interviewed reported recent gastrointestinal illness. One of the ill employees had onset on February 21. Stool samples collected from 2 employees were positive for norovirus GII. One employee had a nucleic acid sequence identical to the patron specimen.

During the onsite inspection, sanitarians noted improper glove use by a cook. Although a specific vehicle of contamination was not identified, investigators suspected an ill food worker was the likely source of the outbreak.
