In August 2017, Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) staff investigated an outbreak of norovirus among individuals who attended a wedding reception at an event center in Annadale, Minnesota on August 12. The wedding reception had been catered by a caterer in Clearwater, Minnesota.

Fifty-six wedding reception attendees were interviewed, and 40 (71%) met the case definition. No one was hospitalized and no one died. Four stool samples submitted by ill patrons tested positive for norovirus GII.P7-GII.7.

MDH Environmental Health sanitarians interviewed event center employees and 172 catering employees. Seven reported recent gastrointestinal illness including two cooks who worked for the catering company. The sanitarians did not observe bare-hand contact with ready-to-eat food, and employees were observed using gloves. Nonetheless, investigators concluded the source of contamination of food was one or more infected food workers.
