In February 2017 Wake County Human Services and the North Carolina Division of Public Health investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections occurring among customers of Mona Pita Mediterranean Grill located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Meal dates ranged between February 3 and February 11, 2017. In total 41 people were sick with fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Thirteen were laboratory confirmed with Salmonella. Twenty three sought medical care and 18 were hospitalized.

Investigators identified violations that could have contributed to the outbreak. These included improper storage of raw meat next to raw vegetables and preparation of raw meat near places where fresh and ready-to-eat foods were prepared.
