In July 2017 the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, and four local health departments in Wisconsin investigated an outbreak of salmonellosis. At least 7 cases were identified. All seven of the patients consumed fresh shell peas purchased at farmers markets in Madison, Green Bay, and Fond du Lac. The public was advised to discard any already shelled (loose) peas purchased between July 19-August 5 at one of three farmers markets.
