In September 2017, Minnesota Department of Health epidemiologists investigated an outbreak of gastroenteritis among patrons of a restaurant located in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Four ill patrons from separate households were identified as outbreak cases. No one was hospitalized and no one died. The implicated meal date was September 6. One person submitted a stool specimen. The specimen tested negative for norovirus and bacterial pathogens.

The cases reported eating a variety of food items ordered off the menu. A case-control study was conducted. No food item was significantly associated with illness.

Hennepin County Health Department Environmental Health sanitarians conducted an environmental assessment on September 11 and interview employees. Two employees reported recent gastrointestinal illness, both of which occurred after the implicated meal date (reported onsets of September 8 and September 9).

Although the etiology was not confirmed, the incubation period and symptoms were most compatible with norovirus. The vehicle and source were not identified.
