In February 2017, members of a high school knowledge bowl team became ill after eating at a restaurant in North Branch, Minnesota. The implicated meal date was February 3, 2017. Six of 17 restaurant patrons became ill. The median incubation period for cases was 24.5 hours (range, 185 to 31.5 hours). No one was hospitalized and no one died.

Cass and controls reported consuming a variety of breakfast foods, burgers, and dinner entrees. No food item was statistically associated with illness.

Minnesota Department of Health Environmental Health sanitarians interviewed 22 restaurant employees. Three reported recent gastrointestinal illness. A server developed vomiting and diarrhea on February 3 and was a server for the complaint group.

While a etiology was not confirmed in this outbreak, the incubation periods and symptoms were characteristic of norovirus. The vehicle was not identified. The source of contamination was likely an infected food handler.
