On June 8, 2018 local, state and federal public health and regulatory officials announced a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Adelaide infections linked to consumption of fresh cut melons. As of July 24, seventy-seven people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Adelaide infections had been reported by 9 states. Thirty-six people had been hospitalized. There were no deaths. Illnesses started on dates ranging from April 30, 2018 to July 2, 2018. Epidemiologic and preliminary traceback evidence indicated that pre-cut melon supplied by Caito Foods, LLC of Indianapolis, Indiana was the source of the outbreak. Most of the ill people reported eating pre-cut melon purchased from grocery stores.

On June 8, 2018, Caito Foods, LLC recalled fresh cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and fresh-cut fruit medley products containing one of these melons produced at the Caito Foods facility in Indianapolis. Recalled products were distributed to Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio. Recalled products were sold in clear, plastic clamshell containers at Costco, Jay C. Kroger, Payless, Owen's Sprouts, Trader Joe's, algreens, Walmart and Whole Foods/Amazon.
