2018-2019 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Newport Infections Linked to JBS Tolleson, Inc. Beef
In October 2018 the CDC announced an outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections linked to JBS Tolleson, Inc. ground beef. On March 22, 2019 the outbreak was declared over. In total, 436 outbreak associated cases were reported by 30 states. One hundred twenty four people were hospitalized. There were no deaths. Illnesses started on dates ranging from August 5, 2018 to February 8, 2019.
Officials in Arizona collected an unopened package of ground beef from an ill person's home. The outbreak strain of Salmonella Newport was identified in the ground beef. Whole genome sequencing showed that the Salmonella isolated in the ground beef was closely related to the Salmonella in samples from ill people.
JBS Tolleson, Inc. recalled 6.9 million pounds of beef products on October 4, 2018 and then recalled an additional 5.2 million pounds of beef products on December 4.
The outbreak was assigned CDC Cluster ID 1808MLJJP-2.
