2018 Outbreak of Salmonella Newport at a Church Supper, Highland, Kansas
In August 2018 the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and Doniphan County Health Department (DCHD) investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections associated with an Indian Taco Dinner held at the Highland United Methodist Presbyterian Church located in Highland, Kansas on August 7, 2018. About 200 people participated in the dinner. Sixty-nine people reported symptoms. Fourteen were laboratory confirmed with Salmonella Newport.
A sample of tomatoes served at the dinner were positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella Newport. Tomatoes were provided by multiple people. On August 31, 2018 KDHE reported that an environmental assessment was underway to determine how contamination occurred.
