2018 Outbreak of Shigella at a Potluck, Charlotte, North Carolina

As many as 40 Charlotte residents became ill with Shigella, after eating contaminated food served at a potluck birthday party at an east Charlotte apartment complex, Forest Hills Townhomes. The party was held Saturday, June 30. Health officials were sure that the contaminated dish was prepared at someone's home rather than at a restaurant because the only outside food at the party was the birthday cake. Several people were hospitalized including 2 children who were in intensive care.
