2019 Multistate Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 Infections Linked to Iceberg Lettuce
In November 2019, state, local, and CDC public health investigators and the FDA investigated an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections linked to iceberg lettuce. Eleven outbreak associated cases were identified. Five people were hospitalized, and no one died.
The Vermont Department of Health collected iceberg lettuce samples from 3 sandwich chain locations. FDA conducted a traceback and determined the lettuce was from a common producer and farm.
The outbreak was assigned CDC Cluster Code ID 1912VTEXH-1.
