2019 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo Infections Associated with Iceberg Lettuce

In 2019 a cluster of 32 cases of Salmonella Montevideo infections were investigated by CDC, FDA and state public health officials. Reported and estimated illness onset dates ranged from March1-October 3, 2019. Among 31 case-patients with information, there were 5 (15%) reported hospitalizations. There were no deaths.

Case-patients reported eating at several fast food restaurants, including one sub-cluster at a Burger King in Minnesota. Overall 11/13 (85%) cases with information reported consuming iceberg lettuce. FDA received and reviewed records from point-of-service. No common suppliers of shredded lettuce were noted based on preliminary traceback. Because of this divergence, and based on the outbreak appearing to be over, FDA did not pursue further traceback.

The outbreak was assigned PulseNet ID: 1908MLJX-1; NORS Report ID: 291257.
