2019 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Blockley Infections Linked to Prepackaged Rotisserie Chicken
During June-October 2019, CDC, FSIS, and state partners investigated a cluster (1906NYJBG-1) of Salmonella Blockley infections. PulseNet identified 95 illnesses reported from 8 states. Three people were hospitalized. Isolation dates ranged from 3/11/19 to 9/20/19. The cluster PFGE pattern (JBGX01.0008) was not new to the PulseNet database but the pattern flagged above baseline during May/June 2019. After PulseNet transitioned to WGS in July 2019, isolates were added to the cluster based on cgMLST and within 0-10 alleles.
Within the multistate cluster, a point source outbreak linked to a NYC grocery store was identified and rotisserie chicken and chicken salad exposure were the likely source of illness. The outbreak strain of Salmonella Blockley was isolated from leftover rotisserie chicken from a patient's home. Among patients in the cluster overall, 40/43 (83%) reported any chicken consumption prior to illness.
