In 2020, routine surveillance by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) Public Health Laboratory detected a cluster of Salmonella Dublin isolates that were closely related by whole genome sequencing. An investigation was initiated. Ultimately, 8 cases in Minnesota (n=4) and Pennsylvania (n=4) were identified. Six people were hospitalized. No one died. Specimen collection dates for Minnesota cases ranged from October 28 to December 29.

MDH investigators conducted proxy interviews for 2 of the 4 cases. A third case refused to be interviewed. The fourth case was lost to follow up. Both of the cases for whom information was available was available reported eating ground beef from 3-pound tubes purchased at two different Grocery Chain A locations. Minnesota Department of Agriculture officials determined that Grocery Chain A sourced ground beef from a packing house in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Among the Pennsylvania cases, all four reported eating ground beef from two different local grocery stores. Purchase dates were available for one of the Pennsylvania cases. Grind logs were obtained from Grocery Store X, which grinds beef in the store. The beef was sourced from the same packing house in Green Bay.
