2021 Outbreak of Campylobacteriosis Linked to Raw Oysters, Rhode Island
In September 2021, the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) identified a cluster of two unrelated campylobacteriosis cases who had eaten at the same farm-to-table restaurant in Rhode Island. Implicated meal dates were August 16, 2021 and August 19, 2021. Eight cases were identified. Three were laboratory confirmed with Campylobacter jejuni. There were 5 probable cases. The only food in common was raw oysters. One person was hospitalized after developing Guillain-Barre syndrome.
An environmental investigation identified wild birds as the likely source of contamination of aquacultured oysters.
