2021 Outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg Infections Associated with El Sombrero Restaurant, Illinois
In August and September 2021 the McHenry County Health Department (MCHD) investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg infections associated with eating at El Sombrero restaurant located at 314 Lincoln Avenue in Fox River Grove, Illinois. A total of 85 (21 confirmed and 64 probable) outbreak cases were identified. Ten cases were hospitalized. No one died.
Genetic testing showed that cases in this outbreak were part of a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Oranieburg linked to whole red, white, and yellow onions grown in Mexico and distributed by ProSource Produce LLC and Keeler Farms. (https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/oranienburg-09-21/index.html).
