2022 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Senftenberg Infections Linked to Jif Brand Peanut Butter
CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigated a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Senftenberg infections associated with J. M. Smucker Company Jif brand peanut butter. As of June 1, 2022, a total of 16 outbreak associated cases were identified. Two outbreak associated cases were hospitalized. There were no deaths. Illnesses started on dates ranging from February 18, 2022 thought May 2, 2022. Of 10 people interviewed, 10 (100%) reported eating peanut butter. Of the nine sick people with brand information, all nine (100%) reported eating Jif brand peanut butter.
WGS analysis of 16 people's samples did not predict resistance to any antibiotics.
On May 20, 2022, J.M. Smucker Company recalled multiple Jif brand peanut butter types. Additional companies recalled food items made with Jif brand peanut butter.
