2022 Multistate Outbreak of Trichinellosis Linked to Bear Meat

In July 2022, the Minnesota Department of Health was notified of a man aged 29 years who was hospitalized with suspected trichinellosis. The patient's diagnosis was confirmed by a positive Trichinella immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibody test result.

Six days before illness onset, the patient and 8 extended family members from three states (Arizona, Minnesota, and South Dakota) had gathered in South Dakota. They shared a meal that included kabobs made from meat of a black bear, which had been harvested by one of the family members in northern Saskatchewan, Canada in May 2022. of the 8 people interviewed, five consumed bear meat, and 8 consumed vegetables that had been cooked with it. Six of the eight persons who attended the meal, including 4 who consumed bear meat and vegetables, and two who consumed only vegetables (but no bear meat) had symptoms consistent with trichinellosis. Patients ranged in age from 12 to 62 years. Three of the symptomatic persons were hospitalized. All recovered.
