Beginning in May 2022, local and state public health officials investigated an outbreak of Campylobacter jejuni infections among people who reported drinking surface water from a watering point, an outlet of surface water from a creek near Paradise, Montana. Nineteen cases were identified. One person was hospitalized. No one died. Illnesses began in May.

On May 16, Sanders County Public Health environmental health staff members collected water samples from a water point on the stream. The Montana Laboratory Services Bureau performed testing on samples. One sample was culture positive for Campylobacter. Genetic testing showed the isolates from human specimens and water samples were highly genetically related.
