2022 Outbreak of Norovirus at Monical's Pizza, Illinois
In November 2022, public health officials at the Tazewell County Health Department (TCHD) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) investigated an outbreak of norovirus among patrons of Monical's Pizza located at 6 Cherry Tree Shopping Center in Washington, Illinois. The agencies conducted a case-control study that identified 317 norovirus infections among restaurant patrons who dined at the restaurant between November 19-26, 2022.
Data analysis showed that salad was the suspected food vehicle (odds ratio = 9.23; 95% confidence interval = 4.48-18.99). Environmental and epidemiologic investigations indicated that the salad was contaminated by an ill food worker who prepared the salad without gloves.
The restaurant was temporarily closed for cleaning and then reopened.
