2023-2024 Outbreak of Salmonella Livingstone Infections, Utah

In January 2024, Utah public health officials investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Livingstone infections in residents of two neighboring counties. A total of 11 cases were identified with illness onset occurring between October 13, 2023 and January 20, 2024. All reported eating at the same restaurant during the week preceding symptom onset. Two people were hospitalized. No one died.

The outbreak strain was isolated from seven composite environmental swab samples as well as two composite food samples, suggesting widespread contamination at the restaurant.

The outbreak strain was isolated from stool collected from a restaurant employee who began working at the restaurant on January 16, 2024. This employee reported eating multiple meals at the restaurant and developed symptoms on January 20.
