2023-2026 Multistate Outbreak of Listeriosis Associated with Soft Cheese
In June 2026, public health officials investigated an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections associated with requeson, a soft cheese similar to ricotta, cheeses supplied by Clover Hill Dairy.
A total of 12 cases were reported from 4 states. Sick people's samples were collected on dates ranging from March 6, 2023 to June 2, 2026. Ten people were hospitalized. One person died.
Six requeson cheese samples and one environmental sample collected by the Maryland Department of Health tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes and matched the outbreak strain. On June 24, 2026, a second environmental sample from Clover Hill Dairy, LLC, collected by Maryland state partners, also tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes and matched the outbreak strain.
Additional companies that have issued recalls or public notifications for products linked to the Clover Hill Dairy, LLC recall. On June 26, 2026, La Ceiba Foods Latin Market Inc issued a recall announcement for requeson cheese that was repackaged as Requeson Salvadoreño (Ricotta Style Salvadorean Cheese) and Requesón Mexicano (Mexican Cottage Cheese) products marketed under the La Colonia and Selectos Latinos brands and distributed to supermarkets, retail stores, and restaurants in the states of Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C between 05/11/2026-06/01/2026.
