CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine investigated a multistate outbreak of human Salmonella Kiambu infections associated with Victor brand Hi-Pro Plus dry dog food. The manufacturer, Mid America Pet Food recalled this and all other pet food they make.

Seven people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Kiambu were reported from 7 states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from January 14, 2023 to August 19, 2023. One person was hospitalized. No deaths were reported.

Victor brand Hi-Pro Plus dog food with lot code 1000016385 was collected from retail locations for routine testing by the South Carolina State Department of Agriculture. Salmonella was identified through analysis by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. Whole genome sequencing showed that the Salmonella isolated in the dog food was closely related to bacteria from sick people. Investigators concluded that sick people likely got sick from touching this dog food, touching things like dog bowls that contained this food, or touching the poop or saliva of dogs that were fed this dog food.

The investigation was closed on January 10, 2024.
