2023 Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 Infections at a Daycare Center, Alberta, Canada
In September 2023, Alberta Health Services investigated an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections among children and adults associated with multiple locations of Fueling Brains day care centers located in Calgary, Alberta. As of September 18, there were 348 lab-confirmed cases connected to this outbreak. Thirty-seven cases had been hospitalized. Twenty-one patients had developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
There was total of 27 lab-confirmed secondary cases.
Based on the epidemiology of the cases, investigators implicated a food item distributed from a central kitchen as the source of the outbreak. A specific food item had not been determined as the investigation was ongoing.
