2023 Outbreak of Trichinellosis Associated with Bear Meat, North Carolina

In 2023, North Carolina Division of Public Health officials investigated an outbreak of trichinellosis associated with consumption of bear meat. Among 34 surveyed attendees at a gathering held in November 2023, 22 reported consuming undercooked bear meat. Ten people experienced clinical signs and symptoms consistent with infection with Trichinella. No one was hospitalized and no one died.
