2024 Multistate Outbreak of Cyclosporiasis Associated with Imported Parsley
In the summer of 2024, cases of cyclosporiasis were reported from five states, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina and Texas. Reported illness onset dates ranged from June 13, 2024 to July 19, 2024. Cases were epidemiologically linked by reporting dining at restaurants in North Carolina or an event in New York. Meals at all locations were reported to commonly include parsley as an ingredient or a garnish. Genetic fingerprinting was done on 20 clinical specimens; temporogentic cluster (TGC) analysis group 19/20 samples into TGC 2024-003 and one sample into TGS 2024-002. The two TGCs were not closely related genetically.
FDA Cara Incident Report 1237 lists 47 laboratory confirmed cases. A report issued by Wake County, North Carolina cites 31 confirmed cases and 4 probable cases. Three people were hospitalized in North Carolina.
