2024 Multistate Outbreak of E. coli O21 Infections Associated with Grimmway Farms Organic Carrots
In November 2024, CDC announced an investigation of E. coli O121:H19 illnesses associated with Grimmway Farms organic carrots. The outbreak was declared over on December 18, 2024. A total of 48 people with the outbreak strain of E. coli O121 were reported from 19 states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from September 6, 2024 to November 10, 2024. Of 47 people with information available, 20 had been hospitalized. No one developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). One death in California was reported.
Cases reported buying different brands of carrots from multiple stores. FDA's traceback of some of these purchases identified Grimmway Farms as the common supplier of organic whole and baby carrots in this outbreak. In response, on November 16, 2024, Grimmway Farms initiated a voluntary recall of these carrots and contacted their distributors. The recall expanded on November 22, 2024 to include additional bag sizes of carrots.
Organic whole carrots were available for purchase at retail from August 14 through October 23, 2024 (365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O Organic, President’s Choice, Simple Truth, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, Wholesome Pantry).
Organic baby carrots include specific best-if-used-by dates printed on the bags ranging from September 11 to November 12, 2024 (365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Grimmway Farms, Kroger, LIDL, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O Organic, President’s Choice, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, Wholesome Pantry).
