CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and USDA-FSIS investigated a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections in 2024. Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data showed that meats sliced at deli counters including Boar's Head brand liverwurst, were contaminated with Listeria and made people sick.

As of November 19, 2024, a total of 61 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria had been reported by 19 states. Sick people's samples were collected from May 29, 2024 to September 13, 2024. Of 61 people with information available, 60 had been hospitalized. One person got sick during their pregnancy and remained pregnant after recovering. Ten deaths were reported including 1 in Florida, 1 in Tennessee, 1 in New Mexico, 2 in New York, 1 in Illinois, 1 in Virginia, and 1 New Jersey and 2 in South Carolina.

Of the 48 people able to be interviewed, 45 (94%) reported eating deli meats. Forty-three of the 45 (95%) reported eating a variety of meats sliced at deli counters. Of the 44 people who answered if they ate liverwurst, 27 (61%) reported deli-sliced liverwurst before getting sick, and 20 reported Boar’s Head brand. These deli meats were sliced at a variety of supermarket and grocery store delis.

The Maryland Department of Health and Baltimore City Health Department collected an unopened Boar’s Head liverwurst product from a retail store and identified Listeria monocytogenes. WGS determined it is the same strain as the strain making people sick in this outbreak.

On July 26, Boar's Head recalled liverwurst and deli products. The recall was expanded on July 30.

On November 21, 2024, CDC declared the outbreak over.
