2024 Outbreak of Salmonella Infections at Madre Oaxacan Restaurant, California

In September 2024, officials at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) announced an investigation of salmonellosis associated with Madre Oaxacan Restaurant & Mezcaleria located at 27007 McBean Parkway in Santa Clarita, California. As of September 24, thirty-one cases had been detected. The implicated meal date was September 13, 2024.

LACDPH environmental health staff conducted an onsite investigation at the restaurant on September 18. Numerous critical food safety violations were observed. These included inadequate handwashing facilities, unsafe food, dirty food contact surfaces and inadequate knowledge by employees about allergens, duties, and appropriate food safety principles.

The restaurant's permit to operate was suspended on September 18.
