On September 4, 2024, Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services Public and Environmental Services issued an advisory to community residents who attended a dinner at the Elks Lodge in Eureka on Wednesday, August 28, that they may have been exposed to Shigella.

As of September 4, 3 confirmed cases and 5 suspected cases associated with the August 28 event had been identified. Additional reports of illness were being investigated.
