In May 2024, fourteen people who traveled to attend or work at the Lightening in a Bottle Festival in Bakersfield, California tested positive for Valley fever. At least 3 of them were hospitalized. No one died.
The fungus that causes Valley fever, called coccidioides, thrives in hot drive climates.
