2025-2026 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonellosis Associated with Moringa Leaf Powder

CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states and the FDA investigated an outbreak of multiple Salmonella serotypes (Typhimurium, Newport, and Richmond) associated with moringa leaf powder.

One hundred thirty-one outbreak associated cases were reported from 38 states. Thirty-six of 121 people with information available were hospitalized. No deaths were reported. Dates of illness onset ranged from August 22, 2025 to June 14, 2026.

State and local public health officials interviewed people about the foods they ate in the week before they got sick.

Of the 84 people interviewed:

  • 74 (88%) reported eating a product containing moringa leaf powder
    • 63 who reported Live it Up Super Greens supplement powders only
    • 5 who reported Why Not Natural moringa powder capsules only
    • 1 person who reported consuming both products
    • 5 who reported TNvitamins moringa powder capsules only

FDA's traceback investigation revealed a common manufacturer between Live it Up Supe Greens supplement powder and Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules. As part of the investigation, FDA and state partners from Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin collected finished product and ingredient samples from sick people's homes and firms in the supply chain. A total of 12 samples tested positive for Salmonella, and 11 samples detected at least one of the outbreak strains of Salmonella during WGS analysis.

On January 18, 2026 Superfoods, Inc. recalled all Live it Up Super Greens supplement powders. On January 28, 2026, Why Not Natural recalled Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules. On May 26, 2026, Total Nutrition recalled two brands of moringa capsules: TNVitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa, and Doctor's Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa. This recall was expanded on June 2, 2026 and June 11, 2026 to include additional lots of the product.

Based on WGS analysis bacteria from 128 people's samples, 13 food samples, 3 dietary supplement samples, and one environmental sample had no predicted resistance. Bacteria from 3 people's samples were predicted to be resistant to ampicillin; 1 of these was also predicted to be nonsusceptible to ciprofloxacin. More information is available at the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) site.

The investigation was closed on July 22, 2026.
